You Lost Me at Hello

November 9, 2016

First impressions count and little touches make all the difference. I always find it striking that I can be working with the most unique, creative, dynamic company only to email them and find myself typing “info@….”

Info?

That’s a passion killer right there.  Sure, there’s the more relaxed “hello” or even the ultra-trendy, we’re so friendly “hi” “hiya” “howdy” or “hey” but it all kinda sounds to me like zzzzz…. sorry, are you still there?

Why do companies hire copywriters or engage in their own creative content only to then fall at the final hurdle and just add an (insert standard) email address at the end?

Why not walk through your customer journey – seeing your advert, visiting your site, making it to the contact page, your email response, your collateral, your sales pitch… all of this needs to be on point, not just your home page copy.  This is your brand voice, consistency is key.

You don’t have to be crazy, funny or cool (although bonus points for originality), it just has to be simple, on brand and say something about you.  Sure you can have “hello” if you want, I just find it a bit meh.

A popular one is “studio@…” that’s what all the creative kids are using these days and it is quite nice, if a bit a la mode!  There are so many options out there – if you want friendly, why not have “letschat@….” for a cafe perhaps “haveacoffee@…” or for a fitness business “getfit@….” even a wedding dress shop could have something like “findthedress@….” – the choices are endless and it’s your chance to show a bit of personality.

This week pay attention to how often you’re asked for your email address, you probably say it out loud more often than you think – that’s branding space right there.  Every space is an opportunity for you to showcase who you are, what you do and what you stand for.  Make it count and spend some time re-addressing your address.
